The Journey

Belt Grades Explained

ITF Taekwon-Do uses a coloured belt system. Each grade (Kup) requires passing a grading examination. Stripe tests are held in class.

10th Kup

White Belt

The beginning. No knowledge of Taekwon-Do. Pure and open mind.

9th Kup

White / Yellow Stripe

First stripe earned in class. Foundation techniques introduced.

8th Kup

Yellow Belt

Signifies the earth from which the plant sprouts. Laying the foundations.

7th Kup

Yellow / Green Stripe

Last beginner grade. Ready for the transition to senior class.

6th Kup

Green Belt

The plant is growing. Taekwon-Do skill beginning to develop. Senior class entry grade.

5th Kup

Green / Blue Stripe

Continued growth and development of technique.

4th Kup

Blue Belt

The plant reaching toward the sky. Technical development advancing well.

3rd Kup

Blue / Red Stripe

Maturing technique. Leadership qualities emerging.

2nd Kup

Red Belt

Danger — high skill. Caution advised in sparring. Control is paramount.

1st Kup

Red / Black Stripe

Ready to mature into the Black Belt. The penultimate grade.

1st Dan

Black Belt

Proficiency in Taekwon-Do. The beginning of true mastery — not the end.

2nd–9th Dan

Advanced Degrees

The journey continues. Black Belt degrees are earned over many years of dedicated practice.

Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need any experience to join?

No experience whatsoever is needed. Everyone starts as a White Belt, regardless of age or background. Our instructors will guide you through every step from day one.

What age can children start?

We welcome students from age 4 upward. Our beginners classes are mixed age, so young children train alongside adults — including their parents — in a safe, supervised environment.

Can I watch before joining?

Absolutely. You are welcome to come along and watch a class before committing to anything. Better still — your first two weeks of training are completely free. Just turn up.

How much does it cost?

Your first two weeks are free. After that, membership fees apply. Please contact us at info@manxtkd.com or call +44 7834 336426 for current pricing details.

Can families train together?

Yes — this is one of the things we are most proud of. All our classes are mixed age. Parents and children can train side by side, progress through the belt system together, and support each other on the mat.

How often are gradings held?

Gradings are held periodically throughout the year when students are assessed by the instructor as ready. Stripe tests are conducted within class. You will never be entered for a grading before you are prepared.

Two Weeks Free. No Commitment.

Just turn up, give it a go, and see what Taekwon-Do can do for you.
